The Ghartey Dove Girls Essay Prize 2024

Our inaugural essay prize is open to all girls aged 13-18 across Ghana. 

Essay Questions

Submission Info

In 800-1,200 words, please answer one of the following:

1. What is the most pressing issue Ghana is facing and how should it be solved?

2. Why is equal access to education important?

3. Is ‘world peace’ a realistic goal?

All essay participants should:

A. Send their essay in a document, scanned or a clear photograph 

B. Write their name, date of birth, age, region, school, favourite school subjects and future aspirations

National Prize winners receive a 1 on 1 career session with the Chair of the General Pharmaceutical Council (UK) and an Advisor to the Governor of the Bank of Nigeria

Judges

The official judges for The Ghartey Dove Girls Essay Prize 2024

Rules and Regulations. 

 

Submission:

1. Essays must be submitted by email with “The Ghartey Dove Girls Essay Prize 2024 submission” in the subject line to … by midnight WAT on Sunday 10th March 2024. No entries after this date will be accepted for the competition.

2. The essay should be attached to the email, either in a document or as a clear scan or photo of handwritten work. 

 

Criteria for entrants:

3. The essay competition is open to anyone who satisfies the following criteria at the point at which the competition closes in accordance with

rule 1:

      3.1 A girl between the ages of 13-18 

      3.2 Currently enrolled in secondary education in Ghana 

    

 

Essay criteria:

4. Only one entry per person will be allowed for each annual competition.

5. The essay must be the sole creation and original work of the entrant. No previously

published work will be accepted. Any form of plagiarism will result in immediate

disqualification.

6. Any essay submitted should conform to the following rules as to content, length and style:

      6.1 The essay must be of no more than 1,200 words 

      6.2 The essay must be no shorter than 800 words

 

Judging and prizes:

7. GDGP reserves the right to shortlist essays prior to judging.

8. The judges’ decisions on any awarding of any prize in the competition will be final and is not subject to any appeal. Essays will be judged on the quality of analysis, and not on judges’ views as to the merits of the wider issue.

9. The prizes are as listed on the website.

10. GDGP reserves the right, in its absolute discretion and without notice, to: 

10.1 make a substitution for any prize; or 

10.2 withhold the award of any or all prizes offered (if in its view no essay entered warrants the award of any or all prize(s)).

11. Prize-winners will be notified once judging is complete

 

 

Information rights:

12. Prize-winners are entitled to refer to the achievement on their CV.

13. GDGP reserves the right to publish or reproduce any or all of any essay entered for the competition, as well as the name and educational institution of the author.

14. Entrants who do not consent to the publishing of their name and educational

establishment (as a prize-winner or otherwise) should notify GDGP by email at the point at which their essay is submitted.

 

Interpretation of the rules:

15. The decision of the GDGP Judging Committee on the interpretation of these rules will be final.
